Children’s and Teenagers Academies

Adult & Child:

First level of the Aquatic Pathway for the National Sports Campus. Parents and guardians are in the water with the child, they can start from 6 months and will stay in the class for approximately two years until they are ready to go on their own in a class. This class is based on the introduction to water, developing breathing techniques and building confidence through been comfortable in the water. The parent/guardian will be instructed how to hold the child comfortably in the water enabling them to gain confidence in the prone and supine position in the water. The class is based on learning through fun. Ages: 6 months - 3 years old.

Splash:

The next level will see the child develop independence in the water without their parent/guardian in a fun environment. The class will be based on movement literacy: running, hopping, jumping and throwing. The class will be based in the Aquazone beach area which will allow the child to gradually be introduced to deeper water without the support of their parent/guardian. Ages: 3 - 4 years old

Levels 1 to 5:

These levels are taught in 1m depth. Swimming is a combination of skills, in the early levels swimmers will learnt different skills individually and gradually put these skills together as they move through the programme. Each stroke is broken into learning the following skills: floatation for body position, leg kick, arm action, breathing and timing. Staring at the early levels learning how to float is the basis for a good streamline body position, learning how to blow bubbles in the basis for aquatic breathing, learning a mushroom float is the basis for a tumble turn as a hand stand is the first step to a dive. These early levels will lay the foundations for each of the skills to be taught in the higher levels. During levels 4 and 5 the swimmer will be gradually introduced to deeper water, learning safety skills such as threading water. Ages: 4 years old and up

Levels 6 to 8:

These levels are taught in 2.4m depth. Stroke technique is developed in these last 3 levels, putting all the skills they have learnt together to improve their stamina by gradually increasing the distance they swim in each session. Muscle memory is achieved through continuous development by repetition, as the swimmers have learnt a skill and built on this skill throughout the programme they are now able to attempt and finally perform a variety of aquatic skills at the end of the programme. These skills will last a life time and enable the swimmer to continue swimming and or join other aquatic disciplines.

Pathway Development:

Training 3 times a week these sessions will improve technique and stamina and keep any young swimmer fit and healthy. These sessions will also enable any swimmer wishing to join the National Aquatic Centre Swim Club to reach the required standard and can attribute to further development alongside other aquatic disciplines such as Diving, Water Polo and Lifesaving.

Synchronised Swimming:

Synchronised swimming is a combination of dance and gymnastics accompanied by music. These sessions are on twice a week, participants will attend a land session prior to the swim session time where they will warm up and learn some of the skills they will perform in the pool session straight after. All levels will be catered for from beginners to advanced.

Rookie Lifesaving:

This is an introduction to lifesaving, the course is based on 3 levels: Rookie Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level is divided into 3 grades: 1, 2 and 3. The participants will learn basic lifesaving skills to carrying out water based rescues when they reach the Gold level. This year we are introducing a basic first aid section to the course, the first aid section will run for 30 minutes prior to the water based section and will instruct each participant in how to stay safe around water and basic first aid techniques including CPR.

Adult Academies

Beginner classes:

Learning to swim has no age limit, all swimmers who attend a beginner’s class have the same fear and apprehensions, from getting your little toe wet to putting your face in the water. Understanding that you are not the only one with these fears will help you to overcome yours. Our teachers are understanding and patient and will help you to achieve your goal of learning how to swim, these sessions are delivered in 1 to 1.20 depth and for the nervous beginners class on a Tuesday is one teacher in the water to help and encourage while another teacher is on pool side directing the class.

Improvers and Intermediate:

These sessions are for those swimmers who have learnt the basics and would like to learn technique and build on their capabilities. The depth of water is the same as beginner classes, however the swimmers will be brought on occasion into deeper water. Stroke technique will be gradually built on from body position leading to leg kick which will lead on to arm action and then combining them altogether with breathing and timing. A variety of strokes and skills will be taught at these levels.

Advanced:

When a swimmer has progressed through the programme they will join the lengths class, this will help to develop confidence in deep water and swimmers will learn new skills like diving. This class is a great way to further your swimming ability and to keep fit, if you are already a confident swimmer you can join this group straight away.

Masters & Triathlon:

For all triathletes or those interested in joining the sport why not enhance your performance in any competition by learning the aquatic skills and technique required for the swimming event. By improving your stroke, you will increase your strength and mobility while improving aquatic stamina.

Aquafit:

Exercise in water to music which can hugely improve your range of movement and increase your fitness levels, strength and mobility. It is particularly beneficial if there are issues in the body such as Arthritis, Rheumatism, Fibromyalgia, Back or Hip Problems & Reduced Mobility. This class is free to all members.

Aqua aerobics:

Exercise in water to music; a work out to burn calories while working on your cardiovascular system. These exercises work on all muscles in the body including your core and help to improve balance, coordination, increase stamina and fitness levels while giving you a sense of wellbeing.
